FAMILY FUN DAY AT CHESTER

On Saturday 13th June 2015, we were invited to participate in an event to showcase Walking Football and it’s benefits and enjoyments at Cheshire County Sport Club in Chester. The event also had mens, ladies & kids football events as well as numerous other activities for both grown-ups and kids. With free entry to the public, the squad and our loyal suppporters had an absolutely great day. The promised rain held off for most of the afternoon and we were very well looked after and also fed (Domino’s Pizza) by our hosts. Many thanks go to John & Ugo for looking after us and making us feel very welcome.

The First Competition

Our first competition as Tranmere Rovers Walking Football came at Moss Rose, the home of Macclesfield Town FC in early May 2015. We had entered the National Tournament organized by Walking Football United. This competition is split into county regions and we had been drawn against Macclesfield, Gentlemen of Glossop and Chester.

Macclesfield had kindly offered to host the event on the main pitch. We changed in the away dressing room which to say the least is very cramped (heaven help the first team next season). Two pitches had been set out for play, but as Chester were unable to attend, we only used the one. A round robin format was used were the 3 teams played each other twice in order to formulate a league table where the top 2 teams would play a knock out final to determine who progressed to the County stage. We drew all of our group games, despite conceding a goal from a very dubious free kick in the second game. This left us in the runners-up spot in the table. The final was therefore contested between ourselves and the hosts. The game was heading towards a goal less draw when with virtually the very last kick of the game, Macclesfield scored with a mis-hit cross cum shot which rolled agonizingly into the net. We were gutted to say the least, but learnt a lot from the competition and hopefully we will progress further next year. Other than the result we had a very good day out, including a scenic tour of Macclesfield, whilst trying to locate the ground.

Pictured below are the 3 teams prior to kick off.

THE FIRST FESTIVAL

Tranmere Rovers Walking Football Club took part in their inaugural walking football festival at Stalybridge Celtic FC on a blustery Monday afternoon in April 2015. Two teams had been entered by us in the 6-a-side round robin tournament. We travelled to Stalybridge in our executive minibus kindly loaned to us by TRFC In The Community ie: Steve. Bruce had managed to sort us out with a kit for the occasion so we were all set. It was played on Stalybridge’s main pitch which was divided into 3 equal size pitches. The 360 age rule was supposed to be in force (ie: the total age of each team’s 6 players on the pitch must total 360 or higher). However due to some of the participating teams being shorthanded, this rule was not implemented.

Both teams performed well considering one finished fourth and the other seventh. Taking into account the fact that the sides who finished in the top three were all using some under age players (less than 50), this was quite impressive. Highlights for the Rovers were Alan (Shilton) saving a penalty earning us a very credible draw against Stalybridge (who finished as runners-up) and Barry (Keegan) scoring the only goal conceded by Manchester City Strollers (the eventual winners). Suffice to say we learnt a lot from our first outing, but had a very enjoyable day. Many thanks to Mike Smith at Stalybridge for organizing the festival.
